Why use side-by-side
There is one major reason - application stability.
There are also consequences: reduced support calls, increased customer satisfaction.
Also easier, trouble-free deployment attracts more clients - they would like to save on support as well.
Ultimately it all adds up to more sales and less cost.
What do I need
- Review your code. Look for why different versions would not work together. Check Microsoft recommendations.
- Decide on grouping of DLLs and other files into assemblies.
- Check if your license allows you to package third party components you use as assemblies. Pressure the vendor if not. Practice shows that as long as you are willing to support the side-by-side part of it, they will agree.
- Build your manifests and test.
